Break with 360, follow around lead
Open break with 360. After the break the lead turns with a hook turn, making the follower rotate around the lead. Be careful to wait for the follower to conclude the rotation. Harder for the follow to follow than with lead around follower, since follow needs to move in a circle instead of standing still, and there is no way for her to know which one you are going to do in advance. video rights video rightsStart position

Shuffle to walk backwards
Follow stands to the right of lead. On 1 the lead pushes the follow sideways/CW, so that she can throw her hair and head in the same direction into a dramatic pose. The follow throws her left leg out to the left at the same time, to complete the pose and for balance. The lead may throw his left leg out to the left at the same time for symmetry; it is a good idea to lift the right leg forwards before 1 for lead in order to quickly shift weight on 1 for the shuffle. On 5-6-7, the lead walks backwards with the follow, one step per count, right foot first (on 5) for lead. Lead signals to follow that a walk backwards will commence by applying pressure with his right thumb on the front of follow's shoulder, approximately where the collar bone is. Only apply pressure enough to make signal be receivedStart position

Lead leads with his left hand follow's right hand into a sideways copa to the right concluding on 3, pointing 90 degress out of the corridor. Lead pulls hand back so as to make follow do the same copa in the other direction (left), still 90 degrees out of the corridor, concluding on 7. this done by letting go with the left hand and grab follow's other hand (the right hand, with lead's left). This may be repeated sideways a couple of times and is broken out of by not letting go with the left hand after the left copa and instead pull follow into a CW spin with the left hand.Start position

Lead brings his right hand with its outer edge downwards (lika a karate chop) on the inside of follow's right wrist. Lead lets go of the follow's right hand with his left hand and lets his right hand guide follow to move her hands over her head into a position similar to the Fifth position in ballet. For this to happen, follow must mirror the move of her right hand and arm, with her left arm. On 3 follow stands in "Fifth position". On 3, lead has also stepped forward to the right of follow, his left arm forming a "C" around the frontside of her body, with his hand resting on the left hand side of her waist. On 5 he is right behind her grabbing her waist with both hands, one on each side, and starts spinning her CCW, but stops her on 6 so that she has only spun half a turn. On 4 the hold is an open hold. On 5 lead raises his right hand and places his left hand with follow's right hand on his waist while lead starts turning left (CCW), then releases left hand's grip (follow then keeps her right hand on lead's waist) and leads follow with his high right hand into another enchufle (CW this time) behind his back.Start position

Cross body lead with travelling turn to 180 to basic one handed open hold
This move is unusual insofar that it takes two "eights" to conclude instead of one. It starts as a normal cross body lead with a traveling turn in the first eight, but on 7 the lead steps forward to the right hand side of the follow with his right foot, bridging the end of the first eight in a flowing motion to become the start of a new cross body lead. In this case the second cross body lead is quite simple, which is often a good idea after the commotion and surprise of the 180. Skill level surprisingly low since the skill level indicates the follow's required skill, not the lead's. video rightsStart position

Cross body lead into hammer lock
Starts just like a normal cross body lead, but the leading hand is kept very low and straight in front when turn begins. Do the crescent (half moon) twist with the hand and be careful not to strain follow's wrist. Be prepared to let go if is strain starts to build up, keep a good face on it and instead do some freestyle dancing.Start position

Cross body lead with traveling outside turn stopped on shoulder
Stop the follow by catching her right shoulder with your right hand as she is facing away from you. Some preparation is needed to perform the stop. since the height of the shoulder varies considerably between different dance partners. Additionally some ladies turn very quickly at this point in the turn, so precision is needed both in height and timing for the stop to work.Start position

Cross body lead with traveling outside turn stopped by waist embrace
Stop the follow by embracing her waist so that she stops as she is facing away from you. Putting the right hand on the side of follow's waist as turn begins prepares follow for stop, and also gives you grip to stop a the correct momentStart position

Edit> show | Open break to right-to left cross body lead with traveling double turn to side by side
Open break to right-to left cross body lead with traveling double turn to side by side
Starts as an open break with lead's left and follow's right hand connected. As follow moves towards lead, lead steps out of the way to the left and offers follow his free right hand to follow's free left hand. Once connection is securely made, lead lets go with his left hand and leads follow in a double (or single if you're pressed for time) cw turn. Leads stops turn by lowering his right hand and stopping it, so that lead and follow are standing side by side, holding hands (lead's right to follow's left)Start position

Edit> show | Side by side holding hands to side by side embrace to two handed cw turn
Side by side holding hands to side by side embrace to two handed cw turn
Leads stands to the left of follow and more in a cross body lead position than a pure side by side. Lead pulls follow's left hand backwards to make her turn ccw. Lead keeps grip so that follow's left hand gets wrapped around her waist and stops her turn. Once stopped (on 3), lead offers follow's free hand (her right hand) his free hand(his left hand), and pushes with this grip her in the opposite turn direction (cw now). Lead must raise left hand quickly and the the righ hand so that they get clear over follow's head. Lead then turns follow in a double turn.Start position

Edit> show | Cross body lead with traveling turn to back-to-back half copa stop
Cross body lead with traveling turn to back-to-back half copa stop
This is in essence just a normal cross body lead with a travelling turn. Normally lead and follow end up holding left to right facing each other. In this move however, the follow's move is the same, but the lead turns half a turn ccw on 6-7 lifting his left hand over his head on the way, so that his left hand is in the exact same position in space as in a normal cross body lead with traveling turn, it is just that his body extends the other way from it, towards and alongside the follow, with the back facing follow's right hand side. In this way lead can stop follow's rotation with his right hand on follow's backStart position
End position
Edit> show | Half copa stop to follow's cw turn behind the back
Half copa stop to follow's cw turn behind the back
Standing in a half copa stop with the back towards the right hand side of the follow, the lead has to make follow turn 1.5 turns cw behind his back. Remember that this is a move that takes the full eight (123-567, like most moves) so there is plenty of time to set up the follow under 1-2-3, before she does the cw turn. Start with giving her a push in the back with your right hand on 1, so she moves forward in the slot (you are standing just outside the slot, along the slot with your back facing the slot, so she is moving forward along your back side). On 5, raise your left hand and rotate your torso slightly cw in order make her rotate cw a quarter turn (she is now facing out of the slot), then move your left hand behind your back over your left shoulder to over your right on 6, this will rotate her another quarter turn so she is facing your back, then rotate your torso slightly ccw to give you enough backwards "reach" to rotate her the last part (a full turn). Finally drop follow's right hand and catch it with your right hand low behind your back.Start position
End position
Edit> show | The 3 turn snake
The 3 turn snake
Lead must move backwards under the duration of the first "eight" this move, and a bit to the side to get into the side by side position. The move covers two whole eights, so it is an unusually long move. Starts in one handed or two handed ladle hold, follow's left hand behind the back. On one lead pulls with his right hand and unwinds follow in a ccw travelling turn, on 5 lead leads follow onwards in a second turn with a halo, and on 1 continues into a third turn by holding his right hand low and make a half moon twist into a side by side one handed embrace position on 3, a shuffle on 5 and a forward cw turn with left to right.Start position

Edit> show | Break behind the back, to right-to-right two and a half ccw turn, to side-by-side the other way
Break behind the back, to right-to-right two and a half ccw turn, to side-by-side the other way
Starts as an open break behind the back. Instead of throwing follow's right hand with lead's right hand, lead just raises the hands and offer the left hand to follow's left hand in front of her and pulls her slightly forward to guider her past him. On 5, lead with his right hand pulls follow into a double ccw plus at the end one extra half turn to make the follow face backwards in the slot in a side by side position.Start position
End position
Edit> show | Side by side double cw turn to ping-pong to follow's hammer lock behind lead's back
Side by side double cw turn to ping-pong to follow's hammer lock behind lead's back
This move is two eights long, since it probably does not make sense to present the second part independently. Starts in side-by-side (buddy) position, lead leads follow into a double cw turn with his left hand, then turns her an extra half turn, stopping her with his left arm arched as a"C" around her shoulder on 1 in second eight. This gives a rubber band effect so that the lead can bounce her back one ccw half turn to the initial buddy position, this time stopping her with his right arm around the shoulders, again bouncing (this is the ping pong section of the move) her back in half a cw turn, but instead of stopping her this time, lead lifts his left arm over follow and turns 3/4 of a turn cw away from follow while pushing his left arm from left to right low behind him to guide follow into a cw turn. Lead then shifts to his right hand in the grip behind the back, and when move is done, he stands with his right hand side facing following, follow in hammer lock, left arm behind the back.Start position

Edit> show | Break behind the back to left arm wrap
Break behind the back to left arm wrap
Break behind the back, keep right to right grip, while offering the left hand to left hand and lead her into an inside turn with the right hand as halo. Let go of the right hand and arrest her as her left arm wraps around her front, and change hold from your left hand to righ hand on 7.Start position
End position
Edit> show | Left arm tandem wrap to side by side hammer lock
Left arm tandem wrap to side by side hammer lock
Pull back and change hand to right hand and offer left hand high to follow's free right hand. Let go with right hand and lead her with your left in an inside turn into a side by side. Since you are holding her right (i.e. outer) hand with your left (i.e. outer) hand, there is with this hold no simple way of stopping and placing her into the side by side. You solve this by turning her one full turn and a bit to the side, and when she is facing you, you switch your hold from your left hand to your right (inner) hand. Hold that hand low and do the crescent hand twist, to ease her into a hammer lock.Start position
End position
Edit> show | Half 360, to cross body lead
Half 360, to cross body lead
Starts with an open break into something that looks like a 360. However, the lead just shows up on the follow's side, rotates the follow half a turn CW, and stays there. The couple are now in a cross body lead position and a normal cross body lead concludes the move on 5-6-7.Start position
End position
Edit> show | One handed flick to side by side
One handed flick to side by side
Starts in right to left. Lead steps up and to the right hand side of follow, while turning CW half a turn, so both are facing in the same direction. On 5, the lead flicks his hand in such a way that the follow turns CCW and stops herself by the resulting one handed embrace. As the follow turns, the lead steps up beside her and stops her rotation with the side of his body. Since follow has a forward motion, it may be a good idea to walk forward into the next eight, and on five in that eight, walk her backwards to a shuffle on one.Start position

Making your own routine
After having performed a salsa move, the lead and follow end up together in a position that makes it possible to directly do some moves, but not others. This site is an attempt to catalog these moves and see which fit together in what order.
The moves, positions and their descriptions are for LA style salsa on 1.
For each move is listed what moves can follow it. In this way you can build up a routine. Click at the "Moves" tab above (or click here to directly go to moves) to get to the moves, or just click around and explore. The routine you build up will be shown in the "My routine" box above.
In the future there should be more moves and positions on the site, and short videos showing each move in slow motion. If you would like to help, click the "Contact" link at the top of the web page and write something.
