Put together your own salsa routine
Click at the "Basic" link in the "My Routine" box to the right. From there you can continue to add more moves to your routine. Or just browse around!
In the right hand column there is a box called "My routine". You can fill it with moves to build up a routine. The routine you build up will be shown in the "My routine" box.
Moves and positions
After having performed a salsa move, the lead and follow end up together in a position that makes it possible to directly do some moves, but not others. This site is an attempt to catalog these moves and see which fit together in what order.
The moves, positions and their descriptions are for LA style salsa on 1.
For each move is listed what moves can follow it. In this way you can build up a routine. Click at the Moves tab above to get to the moves, or just click around and explore.
In the future there should be more moves and positions on the site, and short videos showing each move in slow motion. If you would like to help, click the "Contact" link at the top of the web page and write something.
Terminology
A lot of the terminology for describing the positions and moves have been made up on the spot and needs correction.
Quality
There are also some errors in descriptions and in what moves and positions actually are connected.
About moves and positions
When you learn salsa, you notice a structure or pattern. The teacher may count "1-2-3, 5-6-7" over two bars, and then teach you a move to perform over these two bars. Some teachers count differently (for example 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8), but it is essentially the same.
It seems like the first bar, the 1-2-3 part, is made as a preparation for something , and then that something is performed during 5-6-7, the second bar. The 1-2-3 part is often a bit mundane, and the 5-6-7 part more spectacular. In a cross body lead with a traveling inside turn, 1-2-3 is basically used by the lead to put the follow in position and the lead gets out of the way. On 5-6-7 the follow performs the more spectacular part of the move, the traveling turn, by moving forward in the slot.
